What Does Black Mold Look Like? How to Identify It (And When to Worry)
You found a dark patch on the wall — or a musty smell you can't place — and now you're staring at your phone wondering if it's "the bad one." Here's the honest version: black mold has a fairly recognizable look and smell, but color alone can't tell you the species, and the species matters less than most articles suggest. What actually matters is how big it is, what it's growing on, and where the water is coming from. This guide walks through all of it.

What Black Mold Looks Like
The mold people mean when they say "black mold" — Stachybotrys chartarum — has a few reliable visual tells:
- Color: greenish-black to very dark gray. It reads darker and denser than most other household molds, which tend toward green, brown, white, or gray.
- Texture: slimy or wet-looking while the material is damp; dry, dull, and powdery once the moisture source has stopped. If a dark patch has a gloss to it, the material behind it is probably still wet.
- Growth pattern: circular spots or irregular patches that spread outward and merge over time, often following the path the water took — down a wall from a window, out from a corner, along a baseboard.
Where you find it matters as much as what it looks like. Stachybotrys needs material that has stayed wet for a while — it's a slow colonizer that shows up after prolonged moisture, not overnight dampness. In Carolina homes the usual suspects are bathroom drywall and ceilings, window sills where condensation collects, the cabinet floor under a slow sink leak, around HVAC vents and air handlers, and basements and crawl spaces — which, in our humidity, can stay damp from June through September without any actual leak.
Black Mold vs. Mildew vs. Stains
Three things get mistaken for each other constantly:
Mildew is a surface-level growth — flat, powdery, usually gray or white, and it wipes off tile or grout with almost no effort. If it cleans away easily and stays gone, it was mildew. Annoying, not alarming.
Mold grows into material, not just on it. It's raised, fuzzy, or slimy rather than flat, it's usually darker, and if you wipe it off drywall or wood it comes back — because the root structure (hyphae) is still inside the material.
Water stains and soot are the false alarms. An old water stain is brown or yellowish with a defined ring around the edge, flat and dry, and it never spreads. Here's a quick field test: dab the spot with a drop of household bleach on a swab. A stain won't change; mold typically lightens within a minute or two. (That's an identification trick only — as we'll get to, bleach is not a treatment.)
What Does Mold Smell Like?
Musty. Earthy. Damp soil, wet cardboard, old books, a locker room that never quite dries out. The smell comes from microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) — gases mold releases as it grows and digests material. Your nose is genuinely good at detecting them, often before your eyes find anything.
That leads to the single most useful rule in this article: if you smell mold but can't see it, the growth is probably hidden — inside a wall cavity, under flooring, above a ceiling, or in ductwork. A smell that's strongest in one room, or that hits you when the AC kicks on, is pointing at something. Mold can begin growing inside a wet wall within 24–48 hours of water exposure, so a leak from last month has had plenty of time to establish itself where you can't see it. Don't start cutting drywall on a hunch — a moisture meter or thermal camera can find the source without opening anything.
Is Black Mold Dangerous?
This is where we'd like to lower the temperature a bit, because the internet has done homeowners no favors here.
The health effects of indoor mold are real. Documented, common reactions include nasal and sinus congestion, coughing, throat and eye irritation, and worsened allergy symptoms. The people who need to take it most seriously are those with asthma, mold allergies, or weakened immune systems, plus young children and older adults — for them, significant mold exposure can trigger genuine respiratory trouble.
What the evidence does not support is the "toxic black mold will kill you" framing that headlines love. Most healthy adults exposed to household mold experience irritation-type symptoms or nothing at all. The practical guidance from public health agencies is refreshingly simple: the species doesn't change what you should do. Any significant mold growing indoors should be removed and its moisture source fixed, whether it's Stachybotrys or a common Cladosporium.
Two honest caveats. First, plenty of harmless molds are dark, and Stachybotrys can be confused with several look-alikes — only lab testing actually identifies the species, so nobody (including us) can confirm "black mold" from a glance. Second, dead mold is still allergenic — the proteins that trigger symptoms don't care whether the organism is alive. That's why proper remediation removes mold physically rather than just killing it in place.
How to Tell If You Have Black Mold: A 5-Point Check
- Look at the color and texture. Greenish-black, slimy or powdery, in circular or patchy clusters — consistent with black mold. Flat, light, powdery, wipes right off — likely mildew.
- Check the material. Growing on drywall, wood, ceiling tile, or insulation that's been wet? That's the environment Stachybotrys likes. Surface film on tile or a shower curtain is almost never it.
- Follow your nose. A persistent musty smell — especially one you can't match to anything visible — points to active or hidden growth.
- Think about water history. A past leak, an overflow, a roof drip, chronic condensation, a damp crawl space? Mold needs a moisture source; if you can name one, take the sighting more seriously.
- Watch the symptoms pattern. Congestion, coughing, or asthma that flares at home and eases when you leave the house is a meaningful clue.
If you want certainty about the species, a lab test on a physical sample is the only way to get it. But for deciding what to do, the checklist above is usually enough — and honestly, a photo is faster than all five steps. That's what the chat bubble on this page is for.
When to Worry (and When Not To)
Don't worry much about a palm-sized spot of mildew on shower grout or a bathroom ceiling with poor ventilation. Clean it, run the exhaust fan longer, move on.
Do take it seriously when any of these apply:
- The growth covers more than about 10 square feet — roughly a 3ft × 3ft patch. That's the EPA's threshold for bringing in professional remediation, and in our experience growth that size never happened without a real moisture problem behind it.
- It keeps coming back after you clean it. Recurring mold means the moisture source is still active or the roots were never reached — usually both.
- It's on porous material — drywall, wood framing, insulation, subfloor. And know this before you reach under the sink: bleach does not kill mold on porous surfaces. Bleach is ~90% water; the chlorine stays on the surface and bleaches the stain away while the water soaks in and feeds the roots. It looks fixed for a few weeks, then returns.
- It showed up after a water loss — burst pipe, appliance overflow, storm intrusion. Assume the water traveled further than the stain shows, and remember the 24–48 hour clock started when the water arrived.
- You smell it but can't find it. Hidden growth can't be surface-cleaned, because you can't clean what you can't see.
- Someone vulnerable lives in the home — asthma, mold allergy, immune compromise, infants, elderly family members.
The through-line in every one of those: mold is a moisture problem wearing a fungus costume. Sprays and scrubbing address the symptom. If the water keeps arriving, so does the mold.

Not a stronger spray. The real differences are containment (sealing the work area under negative air pressure so spores don't spread through the house during removal), HEPA air filtration, physically removing colonized porous material rather than treating it in place, moisture readings inside walls and under floors to find the source and confirm the structure is actually dry, and documentation your insurance adjuster will accept.
